Introduction

This case study showcases the development and design process of Beanstalk, a children's Individual Savings Account (ISA) app. Beanstalk aims to create a collective sense of reward and achievement for parents, friends, and family members by facilitating easy and worthwhile savings for a child's future. Through a series of discovery workshops, user research, and rapid prototyping, the app's features and user journey were refined to create a high-fidelity interactive prototype.

Objectives

The primary objectives of Beanstalk were to:

  • Help parents save for their children's future.

  • Encourage friends and family members to contribute to a child's savings.

  • Make saving for a child easy, worthwhile, and emotionally rewarding.

Develop & ideation

To understand user needs and define the app's features, a series of discovery workshops were conducted. As the co-design workshop facilitator, I led collaborative sessions with stakeholders and domain experts. Together, we developed ecosystem maps to visualise the app's interactions, journey maps to identify user touchpoints, and wireframes for initial testing.

Rapid Prototyping

To iterate quickly and validate design decisions, rapid prototyping was employed. The team created multiple iterations of the app's interface and functionality, conducting user testing at each stage. Feedback from users and stakeholders was incorporated into subsequent iterations, leading to an optimised user experience.

High-Fidelity Interactive Prototypes

Based on the findings from the discovery workshops, high-fidelity interactive prototypes were created. These prototypes were instrumental in visualising the app's interface, functionality, and user experience. Key stakeholders were involved in regular presentations to gather feedback and ensure alignment with the project vision.

Conclusion

The development of the Beanstalk app presented unique challenges and opportunities to revolutionise children's savings. Through the collaborative efforts of the team, involving discovery workshops, rapid prototyping, information architecture, and brand design, the app successfully met its objectives. Beanstalk empowers parents, friends, and family members to save collectively for a child's future, fostering a sense of accomplishment and reward in the act of saving.
